Dalí depicts himself sleeping and having a dream. It is known about Dalí that he used sleep deprivation as a practice to induce "lucid dreams". How did he do it? By sitting in a chair holding a key which as soon as he started to fall asleep, dropped on the floor and woke him up. With this technique Dalí gained access to a level of subconscious which otherwise remains hidden.
