Picasso was 83 years "young" when he created this charming caricature of himself - he was a heavy smoker and his iconic striped shirt makes the subject obvious. He was also famous for his arresting gaze reflecting on this image.

Picasso embarked on a series of sugar-lift aquatints known as the Fumeurs (Smokers) during the summer of 1964. These pieces hold significant value due to the intricate technique employed. Initially, a sugar-lift is meticulously crafted by applying a solution of sugar and water onto the plate's surface using a brush. Subsequently, the plate undergoes acid treatment after the sugar solution is removed, allowing for the application of aquatint. The resulting image emerges as the acid dissolves the sugar-drawn designs. In Picasso's work, this process manifests in bold, multi-toned strokes, vividly depicting the essence of the Fumeur.

It is a superb impression with strong colours, created after steel-facing of the plate. Published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris in 1965.
