The photographs of the early state of the cut-out indicate the many changes Matisse made in this artwork and give it a labored appearance found only in a few other cutouts. Matisse's assistant has recalled that Nu bleu IV demanded so many adjustments that it occupied Matisse for some two weeks.
Between 1950 and 1954, at the end of his life, Matisse created brightly coloured gouache paper cut-outs. In 1953 he decided to reinterpret these works as lithographs. Collaborating with renowned lithographers, Mourlot Frères of Paris, Matisse directed and supervised the first 'pulls' during 1954. The lithographs were published after his death in Verve by Teriade, in 1958.
