Original Etching, drypoint, and engravingCreated in 1651Size: 8.1" x 6.3" (20.7 x 16.1 cm)Signed and dated in plate on lower right: "Rembrandt f. 1651".A very clean impression, with margins - fifth state (out of 9), circa 1789-1797 from the P. F. Basan editionReference: Bartsch 272, BB 51-C, New Hollstein 264Clement de Jonghe was one of the most successful print and map dealers in Amsterdam in his time. It is probable that during Rembrandt' s lifetime, he acquired seventy-four of his copper plates. When Rembrandt became bankrupt a few years later after this etching -, his etching plates were brought to Clement de Jonghe's house who saved them from the bailiff. After the Print dealer's death, the business was continued by his widow, until 1679, when the house and its contents -- including the Rembrandt etching plates - were sold by auction.
