A strong 19th century impression, with margins cut just outside the etching plate.

Rembrandt depicts the event when Christ was visited by an angel in the Garden of Gethsemane. The etching shows Jesus’s spiritual agony:
"His closed eyes indicate his inner turmoil and utter loneliness: should he revolt against his fate – his death on the cross – or accept it? His disciples have fallen asleep, and the soldiers in the distance threaten to draw closer."

The diagonal rays of heavenly light and the dark shading behind the figure of Jesus create the drama in this nocturnal scene and foreshadows the tragic fate.
